Senior Aseptic Services Technician, Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Purple pointer
Building specialist expertise through apprenticeship, progression and dedication to patient safety.

My career in Technical Services began when I became one of the first people in Devon and Cornwall to complete the Scientific Manufacturing Technician (SMT) apprenticeship within aseptic services. The apprenticeship gave me a practical route into a highly specialised area of pharmacy while allowing me to develop my knowledge, skills and experience in a patient-focused environment.

Since then, I have progressed through a range of roles, each bringing greater responsibility and helping me build a broader understanding of aseptic manufacturing, quality assurance and patient safety. One of the achievements I am most proud of has been becoming a registered professional through this journey.

Today, I work within aseptic services preparing and supplying medicines that support patient treatment. Although much of this work happens behind the scenes, it plays a vital role in ensuring patients receive safe and effective medicines at the right time.

What I enjoy most is knowing that every task contributes to patient care. Whether preparing medicines or supporting the wider service, I take pride in being part of a dedicated team committed to delivering high-quality treatments safely and consistently.

My career demonstrates that there are many different routes into pharmacy technical services. Apprenticeships offer an excellent opportunity to earn, learn and develop specialist skills while making a meaningful contribution to patient care. I hope my experience encourages others to explore the wide range of careers available within NHS Technical Services and discover a pathway that suits their own ambitions.
