Head of quality, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
I've worked in NHS Technical Services for over 20 years, but my journey began much earlier during a work experience placement in a Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Unit. That experience sparked an interest in pharmaceutical production and quality that has stayed with me ever since.
I studied Pharmacology at the University of Portsmouth before returning to the NHS in Exeter. Although I initially trained as a Pharmacy Technician, an opportunity arose to join the Quality Control (QC) team, and that role shaped the direction of my career.
Over the years, I've been fortunate to gain experience across a wide range of Technical Services to ensure medicines are manufactured safely and consistently to the highest standards. Completing the Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Assurance (PTQA) programme through the University of Leeds was a significant milestone that broadened my knowledge and helped prepare me for future leadership roles.
In 2016, I joined Oxford University Hospitals, initially working within the licensed Radiopharmacy service. My role has continued to evolve and today I lead Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance across several specialist services, including radiopharmacy, quality control, clinical trials and advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs). Every day brings new challenges and opportunities to improve quality systems, introduce new technologies and support the safe delivery of innovative medicines to patients.
Alongside my NHS role, I enjoy contributing to the wider profession. Since 2019, I have been a member of the UK Radiopharmacy Group, contributing to national guidance on quality assurance and audit, and more recently I was part of the working party that developed the sixth edition of Quality Assurance of Aseptic Preparation Services (QAAPS) guidance.
What I enjoy most about my role is knowing that the work we do has a direct impact on patient care. By developing and improving quality systems, supporting innovation and working collaboratively with colleagues across multiple disciplines, I help ensure that patients receive medicines that are safe, effective and of the highest possible quality. For me, Technical Services offers a rewarding career where there are always opportunities to learn, improve services and make a real difference.
