Head of Aseptic Services, North Cheshire and Mersey NHS Foundation Trust
I have worked in NHS pharmacy for more than 20 years, including over 15 years specialising in aseptic preparation and pharmaceutical manufacturing. My interest in Technical Services began early in my career when I worked in a pharmacy with both aseptic and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. Producing chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, antibiotics and oral medicines in ready-to-administer formats showed me how carefully designed manufacturing processes could improve both patient safety and the working environment for clinical teams. That experience inspired me to specialise in aseptic services.
Since then, I have managed licensed manufacturing units, supported MHRA inspections, delivered Good Manufacturing Practice training and led major service developments, including creating new pharmaceutical production facilities. To complement my practical experience, I completed the Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Assurance (PTQA) postgraduate diploma and trained to become a Qualified Person.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is helping organisations improve quality and safety. Whether leading remediation programmes, introducing new technologies or teaching postgraduate pharmacy students, I enjoy supporting the development of others, sharing good practice and helping teams achieve excellence.
Technical Services combines science, innovation and quality assurance to ensure patients receive safe and effective medicines. Although much of our work happens behind the scenes, every improvement we make has the potential to benefit patients. For anyone who enjoys science, problem-solving and continuous learning, it is an incredibly rewarding career.
