Aseptic Services Operator, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust

Purple pointer
Preparing life-saving medicines with precision, teamwork and uncompromising attention to detail.

Working as an Aseptic Services Operator means being part of a team dedicated to preparing medicines safely for patients. Every day I work alongside senior colleagues, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and other technical staff, to make sure our aseptic service runs safely and efficiently. We also work closely with teams such as Quality Assurance, clinical services, estates and facilities. These partnerships are essential in helping us maintain high standards and comply with national requirements, including Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and Quality Assurance of Aseptic Preparation Services (QAAPS).

A typical day often begins with cleaning part of the cleanroom or isolator suite to ensure the environment meets the strict standards required for aseptic preparation. I may then generate production worksheets, assemble the raw materials needed for each batch, or check trays that have been assembled by colleagues before they move to the next stage of the process.

Some days I work inside the isolator, preparing medicines using aseptic techniques and carefully following the Batch Manufacturing Record. Before materials can enter the cleanroom, they must go through a strict transfer and sanitisation process using sporicidal and alcohol disinfectants to minimise the risk of contamination.

Alongside production, I also monitor stock levels, check expiry dates, record temperatures and humidity, and monitor the air handling system to help maintain a safe manufacturing environment. If I identify any issues, I make sure they are escalated promptly. Attention to detail, teamwork and following procedures consistently are essential in this role. Although much of our work happens behind the scenes, knowing that every product we prepare contributes to safe patient care makes it incredibly rewarding.
