Quality manager, Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Purple pointer
Managing quality systems to deliver safe, compliant medicines with confidence.

As a Quality Assurance Manager, I am responsible for releasing batches of medicines manufactured under our Manufacturing Specials Licence, ensuring they meet the required quality standards before they are supplied to patients within our Trust or distributed to other hospitals.

My role extends far beyond batch release. I oversee the quality of the medicines we produce by investigating unexpected results, managing changes to processes, keeping our service aligned with new regulations and research, and planning staff training. Much of my work focuses on maintaining high standards every day so that we are always prepared for external inspections and can continue to provide safe medicines for patients.

No two days are the same. While much of my work is planned, I also respond to unexpected challenges such as equipment failures, medicine shortages, product recalls, sudden increases in workload or incidents affecting staff. These situations require careful decision-making, collaboration and a strong focus on patient safety.

After completing the Scientist Training Programme (STP), I began mentoring future STP trainees and now lead training for new cohorts joining our department. I also line manage members of the Quality Assurance team, supporting their development while helping maintain a positive and collaborative working environment.

What I enjoy most about my role is the variety. Whether preparing for an MHRA inspection, solving an unexpected problem or supporting colleagues to develop, every day brings new opportunities to improve the quality of our service and ensure patients receive safe, high-quality medicines.
