Senior Quality Technician

Purple pointer
Ensuring every medicine meets the highest quality standards before reaching patients.

No two days are the same in my role as a Senior Quality Technician. One day I might be carrying out the final quality checks before chemotherapy is released for patients, while another I could be releasing batches of intravenous antibiotics for hospitals across the North East of England, approving over-labelled medicines for Omnicell systems on hospital wards, or checking pre-filled products supplied by external manufacturers. Every decision I make helps ensure medicines are safe, effective and ready for patient use.

Alongside these responsibilities, I also work within our Quality Assurance office. My role includes investigating and risk assessing deviations, preparing stability assessments for raw materials, writing microbiology reports, carrying out internal audits and supporting workforce development by marking Level 2 NVQ work completed by our trainee Production Assistants. I also develop teaching sessions to help colleagues continue building their knowledge and skills.

The part of my role I enjoy most is releasing chemotherapy. We manufacture hundreds of chemotherapy preparations every week and knowing that each one has the potential to make a real difference to someone's treatment gives me an enormous sense of pride. Although patients may never meet the quality team, our work is an essential part of ensuring they receive safe, high-quality medicines.

My career began as a Production Assistant in aseptic services, where I prepared chemotherapy and intravenous antibiotics while following standard operating procedures. As I gained experience, I became increasingly interested in understanding how processes were developed and why quality systems were so important. After qualifying as a Pharmacy Technician, I moved into Quality Assurance and have continued to develop my knowledge by completing the Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Assurance (PTQA) programme through the University of Manchester, supported by my Trust.

For me, Technical Services offers the perfect combination of science, problem-solving and patient impact. Every day brings opportunities to learn something new while contributing to the safe delivery of medicines that improve hundreds of patients' lives.
