Supporting safe patient care through expert aseptic preparation and continuous development

My journey into aseptic services began after completing an MSc in Pharmaceutical Science, building on my background in Chemistry. I wanted a career where I could apply my scientific knowledge in a way that directly supported patient care, and joining the Aseptic Services team at the Royal United Hospitals Bath gave me exactly that opportunity.

I started as a Band 2 Aseptic Services Assistant, supporting the preparation of high-risk medicines while learning the fundamentals of working in a cleanroom environment. There was a great deal to learn, from gowning procedures and contamination control to understanding why every stage of the manufacturing process must be completed carefully and consistently. Working alongside experienced colleagues helped me develop my confidence and appreciation of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and standard operating procedures.

After completing my training and gaining experience, I progressed to my current role as a Band 3 Aseptic Services Operator. I now prepare high-risk medicines, including chemotherapy and monoclonal antibody treatments, within a Grade A isolator. Taking on greater responsibility has been both challenging and rewarding, and it has helped me develop my technical skills, confidence and attention to detail.

One of the things I value most about working in Technical Services is knowing that, although our work takes place behind the scenes, every preparation plays an important part in helping patients receive safe and effective treatment. I've also developed strong teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills by working closely with colleagues who share the same commitment to quality and patient safety.

Starting as an assistant and progressing to an operator has shown me that there are many opportunities to develop a rewarding career in NHS Technical Services. My advice to anyone considering this career is to be curious, embrace every opportunity to learn and never underestimate the value of building your experience step by step.
